Best Kitchen knife set around or under $100

The wife is looking at a Cuisinart or Chicago Cutlery set. I know nothing about this so thought I would ask you guys.

Chicago Cutlery -- good quality....or....for a few bucks more: Dalstrong Knife Set. You'll never go back.

You might do better buying individual knives... paring, chef, slicer, boning, utility

do you need steak knives too?

check out woot

Henckels has a set for under 100...

this looks pretty nice

When I worked in the kitchens I used a Wusthof. German made. Holds an edge very well. I put it on my wet stone at least once a week and used a steel several times a day. It runs right around $100 last time I checked. That is just for a Chef's knife. A set, way more.

Take a good look at Victorianox. Same folks that make the Swiss army knives. They have a line of very reasonable and quality knives. I have three of them in my blocks. I didn't care for the chefs knife because I'm used to a much heavier and balanced chefs knife. Can't be beat for the price.

It's important to find knives that fit your hands comfortably. The highest quality knives are useless if they never leave the block. I generally counsel against buying sets and opting to assemble the collection piecemeal. Of course, there are instances where that isn't practical.

Ended up getting a Calphalon set, a bit more expensive than I wanted, but after using the chef's knife to carve a turkey and slice a brisket the other day, well worth it. They all feel very high quality.
