Old Meerschaum with a Sweater
Old timers used to sew chamois around their meerschaums to keep the surface from being marred by finger oils and such. It didn't do anything for coloring. This is a WDC with an amber stem. Pipes with fancy caps and bands like this were made from about 1890 to the 1920s. So I'll punt and say it dates to 1910.
The chamois doesn't obstruct the pipes nicer features so I left it on. It's a great big pipe in decent shape and smokes well. The stem was pretty messed up and that was my main obstacle in getting it smoke worthy. Ain't it purty? |
