Why is it that...
...when discussions are about great guitar players, nobody ever mentions Brian Setzer. Is it because of the rockabilly thing?
Man, the guy can flat out play. |

Setzer and Jim Heath (Rev. Horton Heat) can both wail, but aren't revered like the "tricksters" like Vai, Satriani and Van Halen.
Personally, I've seen Setzer and Heath live (I actually knew Jim when I lived in Dallas) and wouldn't trade either one for a stage full of Vai, Satriani, etc. Rev. Horton Heat flat out rocks.

Yes I am a fan. I don't think he's up there with the greats but Dirty Boogie is
one of the finest recordings in it's time IMHO. Like you said he's playing a style (heavy on the big band swing) that will not appeal to everyone.

Just caught the Rev. a couple of weeks ago. Pretty good show.

And while we're on the subject of Brian Setzer...the original bass (stand up bass) player for The Stray Cats, Lee Rocker, has had a band for a while. I've seen them twice in the last year. The second time was in a small blues club in San Fransisco. They rocked the house down. It was a helluva show.
