Another of my stupid questions:
With all of the coffee brewers made that only takes minutes to brew coffee, why would anyone buy instant coffee?

To avoid cleaning the coffee brewer afterward?

Years ago I used instant coffee until a girlfriend gave me a Melitta and a grinder. Never looked back.

my parents are in their late 80s. They use instant because it is one less thing to clean. I would suggest that calling my parents lazy is wrong they remain the hardest work mist determined people I know, but standing at the sink is hard on them, especially my dad who is quite weak. (they refuse to buy a dishwasher because that would be lazy...)
better instant coffee than a broken coffee pot...

The keurig would be the death of instant coffee, were it not so expensive. Even the cheap ones at < $100, add in the cost of the pods and your first 100 cups of coffee cost you $1.50 each or so...
My parents still use a drip coffee maker, one that has a thermal, stainless steel carafe. But they drink maybe 2 cups each in a day.
