A couple years ago I was watching one of those appraisal TV shows. One of the segments featured a couple who were remodeling their old house. In the wall they found an old cased meerschaum claw pipe. It was a big one! And in really fine shape. I decided I wanted one. So ever since I've been watching eBay for one like it. I have seen quite a few. But usually the good ones sell for big $$. Or the condition is really poor. Cheap ones with rudimentary carving can be had easily. I wanted a nice one in good condition for (what I consider) a reasonable price. I finally found one that looked lightly smoked with an amber stem and a case. It had a relatively high starting bid and a fairly high "buy it now" price so people were staying away from it. Size wasn't specified, but I figured if it was too small for me I could always clean it up an sell it. I put in the lowest bid I could ($75) and won. Turned out to be a decent sized pipe. pic is close to life size. It smokes good too.
