Anyone heard of Iron & Wine?
Iron & Wine is actually one guy. He used to record songs in his bedroom and he played all the intruments himself, and we're not just talking a guitar and a drum machine. Somehow he was discovered by a label and asked to send in some samples. Several months later they receive two full length albums and they were so good they just pared them down to 12 songs and release them as they were for his first album. He's since recorded a couple more albums in the studio, but they manage to retain that raw-ness (for lack of a better term). I'm not sure how I would categorize his music, but it's been called New Folk, Americana, Southern Folk Rock, etc. None seem to really fit. I didn't particularly like it at first, but after repeated listening I'm more and more impressed. He's a superb musician and there are just so many layers that you hear something new each time you listen. His singing is very understated and his voice and his lyrics have a very haunting quality to them.
Here his page at AllMusic.com Here's the album I have at Amazon. Check out the samples, if you're interested.
