I never put ice or water on my scotch, but plenty of rums show their best with just a tear of water. Specifically those rums of barrel strenght, a splash of water reveals so much more.

When trying a new rum in a bar I always ask the water on side, then about halfway through i pour some into the glass. Kinda similar situation with bottle aged beers; first pour it into glass carefully leaving all sediments in the bottle, drink some and then pour the rest in as well.

As with all in life, try all you think might be good (well, not everything) and stick with what you find suiting you. No matter what others think. If you stick with something only few people like though, it might be hard to get but the hunt is part of the fun.
