I'm starting to like this

I've been smoking my pipe more and I'm really starting to enjoy this. Once I got used to working the pipe it became more enjoyable. I'm finding myself reaching for my pipe just as much as a cigar, if not more.

One question I have. How are you supposed to deal with the ash? I've basically just kept pushing it down with the pipe nail until all the tobacco has been consumed. Then I dump it all. Is that the proper way to do it? Or should I be emptying the pipe as I go?

That's what I do. Just push the ash down as you smoke. Some pipers do empty the bowl as they go, but it doesn't need to be. Sometimes when I smoke a flake tobacco that I have folded into the bowl instead of rubbing it out, I will tap out some of the ash just to get a better draw on the tobacco. That's just me, I guess.

I find that if I don't ash as I go, it's much more difficult to relight if needed. I have cork knockers in my ashtrays so I don't ding the bowl.

Like Andy, I dump the ash as I smoke it down. Finer shags and heavy cased tobaccos are hard for me to relight. Once I knock the top layer of ash off, it lights much better.

For this newbie, at this stage, I'm finding that it's easier to just use the pipe nail and push it down. I've watched some youtube videos and that's what I've seen many of the "experts" do.

There were a couple times that I was having difficulty relighting, so I did dump the ash. But once I found that I could just push the ash down, I didn't seem to have any problems with relights. But, certainly, if I'm having difficulty relighting then I'll just dump the ash.
