glenfiddich 12 green bottle

I found this stuff on sale for $30 at the liquor store, it usually sells in the 40-50 range. I decided to give it a try tonight, so I can snag another bottle if I liked it before it went back up.

The label said to look for pears, sherry, fruitiness, and wooden cask flavors.

Frankly, I didn't get much of that at all. No sweetness, and only the slightest fruit hints, served neat. I got an earthy taste, maybe that would be peat, and wood. There was a strong vanilla like character. It was very smooth, rather light. I'd have liked a little saltiness on the finish, it came out feeling a bit watery. I think I'll pick up another.

This one certainly won't offend any whisky drinker. It's a subtle spirit, with that typical Glenfiddich apple-pear fruit aspect counterpointed by a very subtle touch of smokiness... Much better, in my opinion, than the old no-age-statement Glenfiddich Special Reserve it has replaced (though Jim Murray might disagree with me here).

The true sign of any whisky's merit.

In short, a decent dram. Rest assured, though, that the 15-year old and 18-year old bottlings represent a BIG step upward in taste, though (of course) at the inevitable price premium they command.

One of my first single malt purchases.

May be time to get another bottle myself.
