Question About U2 Song "Bloody Sunday"

I have heard both that it is about Northern Ireland or that it is about the infamous day in American cival rights of the 60's. Anyone?

The spark for the song was the incident that occurred on January 30, 1972, when an IRA bomb killed 13 Irish citizens at a civil rights protest in Derry. A non-partisan cry to end the violence in Ireland, ending up (as Bono often does) with a reminder of his faith. Pretty interesting contrast and final thought, really. The real battle?

I can't believe the news today
I can't close my eyes and make it go away.
How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
'Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.

Broken bottles under children's feet
Bodies strewn across the dead-end street.
But I won't heed the battle call
It puts my back up, puts my back up against the wall.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Oh, let's go.

And the battle's just begun
There's many lost, but tell me who has won?
The trenches dug within our hearts
And mothers, children, brothers, sisters
Torn apart.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

How long, how long must we sing this song?
How long, how long?
'Cos tonight
We can be as one, tonight.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

Wipe the tears from your eyes
Wipe your tears away.
I'll wipe your tears away.
I'll wipe your tears away.
I'll wipe your bloodshot eyes.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.
Sunday, bloody Sunday.

And it's true we are immune
When fact is fiction and TV reality.
And today the millions cry
We eat and drink while tomorrow they die.

The real battle just begun
To claim the victory Jesus won
On...

Sunday, bloody Sunday
Sunday, bloody Sunday..

I thought it was about when British soldiers opened fire on a group of protestors.

You sort of mushed two events into one here ....

On January 30, 1972 British troops fired into civilians during a march in Derry killing 13.

In the late 80s on a Remembrance Day (of the massacre) an IRA bomb went off also killing 13.

Seeing that the War album was released in the early 80s it was the former incident that inspired the lyrics. Although it's the latter incident that provides incredible irony.

A coworker of mine was riding with her family in a car on Bloody Sunday and they realized something terrible had happened because they were detoured around the town. "after that... we realized that the Martin Luther King model of civil disobediance wasn't going to work and soon after that the IRA began fighting back..."

Ireland has had two "Bloody Sundays" -- 1920 & 1972:

I think it's the latter of Joey's links, when the British paratroopers opened fire on protesters
