I'm saying that a hardwood cabinet like mahogany, walnut or oak will convert just great.

As a soft resiny wood, Pine is a poor choice for a humidor project. Any kind of humidor project. MDF is preferable to pine.

I think that goes without being said. Many high quality cabinets use MDF.

If I were starting out from scratch, I would definitely not choose pine. However, pine is what I have, and I'm really not looking for anything more than a wooden coolerador, just hoping to make it look nice.

Okay. My advice then is to seal it, humidify it and see what happens. Don't mess with a liner at all. If you really need one for the sake of a good seal, use a thin plywood like birch or mahogany. And I think I'd use active humidification. Beads might soak up pine resin. It will probably work fine for box storage.
