Joe Satriani/Deep Purple
Live at the Verizon Amphitheater in Selma (San Antonio).
First of all, just so you know, someone gave us the tickets. We got there just as Satriani was firing up. Is it just me, or do all of his songs sound the same. With the possible exception of the one where he attempts to sing... And does he know more than one facial expression? The hour-long set seemed to go on forever. Kudos to the roadies, though; there was only about 25-30 minutes between the sets. All apologies to Deep Purple fans, but these guys are old and need to stop. All of the "new" stuff they played (I think the new album is called "Bananas") was just insufferably bad. The worst part is that Gillan no longer has the pipes to pull off the sound of only 10-12 years ago when they first got back together and did that foul "Back Door" song. Not that he didn't try, which made it all the more painful to watch. And someone should clue Ritchie in that if you want to keep touring in a famous rock band, you need to either dye your hair so it's not so grey, or else cut it to signify your acceptance of getting old. Due to the fact that they were wholly unimpressive (and to miss as much traffic as possible), we left early. Why couldn't the free tickets been for Weird Al's show tonight?
