CAO Maduro Robusto

2005 CAO Maduro Robusto 5 x 50
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Ecuador
Filler: Nicaraguan and Dominican

Storage: 64 – 67 RH at 65 – 68 F.

Construction: Beautiful fine-toothed and oily maduro wrapper with some very minor veining –looks like oiled black wanut . A boxed pressed rock-solid roll with no soft spots is this a cigar or a 2X4? . Clipped clean.

Prelight: Sweet, earthy tobacco aroma. Sweet molasses, wood and nutty flavors. Medium-firm draw, perfect.

Burn: Lit evenly, fairly straight burn with no touch-ups. Very firm lt. gray ash tinged with dark charcoal grey.

Drink: Starbucks Frappucino.

Smoking Notes: Initial impression is heavy chocolate, cream, rich tobacco and a wonderful sweet molasses and a hint of lemon oil on the finish. The smoke is thick, oily, soft and smooth. The aroma is sweet-woody and lightly floral. At the 1/3 point, the cigar turns very woody – an oaky taste like some fine cognacs – heavy coffee, chocolate and some light earth notes round out. By mid-point it’s hard to tell the cigar form the Starbucks Frappucino – dark, earthy coffee, dark chocolate and cream abound with sweet wood overtones and the molasses sweet and a hint of leather and cedar on the finish. By 2/3, the smoke darkens a bit, kicking up the dark coffee to an espresso note and the chocolate to a heavy dark chocolate. The earth and leather tones also deepen with maybe just a hint of peppery spiciness under the sweet molasses finish. The smoke stayed very smooth and oily until I nubbed it. An excellent hour and a half smoke. Highly recommended as one of the top 5 maduros I have found.

Overall Impression: The CAO Maduro is a distinctly medium strength smoke abounding with flavor. For those who, like me, soured on CAO’s during the Perdomo years (pun intended), give ‘em another try. Made in concert with Torano since 2003, CAO’s are back (for more on the changes at CAO see Changes At CAO). At about 4.75 by the box or 6 bucks single retail, these are one helluva maduro and won't break the bank.
