A drop of water in your Scotch?

I'd written of the positive and negative aspects of adding a drop or more of water to one's whisky in this article a while back. Imagine my surprise, then, when I stumbled across a 3-pack of Uisge Source Water of Scotland at my local specialty food emporium...

I still can't say for certain whether the particular taste parameter of this product is worth the cost. But it definitely added to the positive atmosphere of our latest whisky tasting gathering last weekend!

Anyone ever notice the French bottled water Evian is "naive" spelled backwards?

Of course, if circumstances allow me access to high quality spring or well water (not bottled, but sourced at the source! - Bourbon lovers would term it 'branch water'), the I'll happily go that route.

A gentle, very gentle hit of club soda makes the single malt go down nicely

Club soda in ANY amount in single malt is an abomination.

As per my A Rich Pour article on whisky and water...

Quote:
I would be remiss, when discussing the mixing of whisky and water, to not mention one of the most famous combinations of these two liquids – whisky and soda. The effervescence of soda water brings, along with a considerable degree of dilution, a refreshing, sparkling flavour dimension to this classic cocktail.

Of course, I’d likely resist adding soda water to an expensive, hard to replace malt whisky, given that the spirit is bound to end up playing second fiddle to those bubbles. On the other hand, any decent blended whisky (or modestly priced malt) can provide the perfect foundation for a few cubes of ice and a top-up of soda. The traditional lemon wedge garnish is optional.

An interesting variation on whisky and soda is the floater, which dispenses with ice cubes and sees the whisky gently layered atop the soda water rather than stirred in.
