Scotch Recommendations in Scotland

We will be leaving one month from tomorrow. Any local scotches that I'll never find here that are must tries?

If we can't find them here, how would we even know of them?

I'm hoping some of our well traveled members such as Doug might have some suggestions on some to seek out or look for.

Go into a local pub and ask for what the best the locals drink. You can't go wrong with that approach. And you will endear yourself to the pub owner and barman. Trust me on this.

BTW.... DO NOT ask for ice. Drink it neat and a water back if you must. But NEVER ask for ice in the scotch OR in the water back.

Call me about this if you wish. You will not regret my advice.

Great advise, and thx for the heads up regarding ice, that is usually how I drink it, so good to know.

Your best bet is to keep an eye open for limited edition single cask (often cask strength, which is even better) releases of malt whiskies not available State-side, or for whiskies from distilleries that have closed down (Brora, Dallas Dhu, Glen Mhor and Port Ellen are but four examples). The latter, though not exactly rarities on this side of the Atlantic, are (owing to their invariably higher bottle prices) perhaps better consumed on a dram-by-dram basis in a pub or whisky bar...

Plus they always seem to taste better when consumed in their country of origin anyway.

Also, be sure to avail yourself of the opportunity to sample whiskies drawn directly from cask. Many distilleries offer this sort of tasting in their organized tours. And some distilleries even provide one with the chance to bottle whisky directly from selected casks.

As regards malt Scotch whiskies that tend to 'fly under the radar' in the North America market, I'd single out Bladnoch, which is produced in the Borders region of southern Scotland. It's a fine whisky!

Look for non-chill-filtered bottlings that specify natural colour (that is, they haven't been colour-corrected with the addition of E150). That way, you'll be tasting whisky as it REALLY tastes, with minimal processing to detract from the experience.

Like has already been mentioned, ice just isn't the way to go at all. Clear still spring or well water on the side, to be added drop by drop to personal taste, as well as to refresh one's palate.

And don't forget that whisky and ales can greatly enhance local foods as well (especially fresh or marinated seafood, many main dishes and desserts). Nothing much better than a Sherry-cask matured Highland malt with sticky toffee pudding!

Anyone who drinks great scotch, especially single malts, with ice should be terminated with extreme prejudice. Preferably by being drawn and quartered.

May I suggest a dab of chocolate syrup in your 25-year Macallan
