If you want to buy one thing and NEVER worry about it again, do this:
http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-Trackles...+pearls+litter

Put whatever amount you want (anywhere from 1-16 oz depending on size of cooler and amount of cigars) in a mesh container, cover 60% of them with distilled water, and repeat every 3-6 months.

I bought a couple pounds of heartfelt beads about 10 years ago and they still work spot on.

Part of the problem that you are experiencing is that RH is relative

Temperature/humidity. If temp swings, and the moisture in the air doesn't, your RH figure will change. If a room cools or warms up overnight, your RH figure will shift all over the place, but this does not mean that your humidification is not working. It's just a reflection of the math.

So keep it as stable as you can with temperature, and don't open it or leave it open very often. You could also stash extra wood in it to help stabilize it a little more. Most humidors are just veneer, and some wood in the trays. take the cedar sheets that come in certain brands and use them somehow. Another way to do it would be to take cedar sticks that come in some boxes, and replace a few cigars with them.

Adding wood won't do a whole lot, but it's something that can help a bit. the thing to remember is that adding or reducing humidification is a slow process, and it takes a long time to replace whenever you lose it by opening it up.
