Since Sweet Maria's has long provided information about popper roasting, I'm thinking that one is a good bet....

Absolutely! If you do get one, please let us know how it works...

Don't you need a voltage adjuster to use a popper? Been so long, I'm not sure if my memory is accurate.
Edit: used the wrong word. Instead of adjuster, I should have said regulator.

Nope. Poppers are built for normal household current. which is pretty "dirty." The popper that wanted a Variac or other voltage regulator was the Cafe Rosto. Supposedly, they didn't handle voltage spikes well. They were discontinued some years ago, though I still have one that ronin gifted me. I have it up at our Colorado place because its enclosed chamber handles cold weather better than a popper.
I bought a Variac a while back with the intention of going whole-hog nuts on rewiring a Poppery...Variac on the heating coil to adjust temperature, ceiling fan dial switch on the fan to control airflow, thermocouple to monitor temperature. A real Frankenpoppery! I'ma do it when I retire and have enough free time on my hands to really get my coffee geek on...

Well, I bit the bullet and asked my wife to get me the FreshRoast SR500 for Christmas. I am VERY excited.

It is amazing. I've now done three different roasts, two dark, one medium and the control is awesome. The roaster has plenty of power to agitate the beans so you just sit and watch. It also has a chaff collector at the top so after the roast you just have to dump it out, no mess. I'm really impressed with the ability I have to alter the fan speed and temperature settings. It is really easy to speed up or slow down a roast to get it exactly where you want. While I prefer dumping the beans immediately and cooling in a collander, the machine also has a 'cool' setting that cools the beans while still in the chamber. I keep worrying they will continue to cook a bit on that setting.
All in all, I am thrilled and will be having a LOT of fresh coffee in 2019. The machine came with an 8lb. sampler which I think is an excellent move by the vendor. |
