Four Roses Single Barrel

Great stuff - 100 proof more than I prefer but it is really good whiskey

100 proof just means you need one cube of ice

I prefer the small batch. The single barrel is really inconsistent, which I suppose is to be expected.

I have a single barrel Old Forester that tastes not much like any of the 'usual' old foresters... which makes me wonder how much variation there is

Four Roses Single Barrel

We make commitments before picking so there is no issues of cost not being covered. Sometimes your commitment gets cut due to a short barrel

A barrel will hold 240 bottles but most of ours come in around 130-170. Just depends on where and how long they were stored in the rickhouse. We pay retail bottle prices

Our group will commit to 1-2 barrels but then after the tasting a couple more barrels get sponsored by a members who take the risk of purchase but in reality if it's a good barrel everyone wants some so the the risk is low. Worst that can happen if you sponsor the barrel is you end up with a case or two of great whiskey. Not so bad

Edited to add our time slot with Four Roses is always 9:30am. Great way to start the day!

Quite the variation in depth of colour (in the 2nd and 3rd photos above) among the range of barrel samples. I'm assuming that's largely due to variations in degree of charring of the barrels used for maturation.

Now I'm thirsty!
