Piraat Ale
A belgian, triple strength (10.5% alcohol) in the IPA style... what a wonderful beer/escape from the week. Highly recommended.

That is my wife's favorite. It will knock you on your ass, though.

Is it a barley wine like Bigfoot Ale and Old Foghorn?

No. It is a Belgian Strong Ale. It is golden in color.

Otherwise, if it should be taken at face value, then I understand--a strong ale in the Belgian style or from Belgium. Sounds like something to look for at the Brickskeller Saloon when I am in D. C. in a few months.

Actually it is a Belgian IPA, not that it tastes like the American variety. And example of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale is Duvel.
Make sure you have the Piraat in the bottle. On draft it is far too alcoholic.

Just Kidding. :P But I will try both versions if it is available. Is it hoppy like a Sierra Nevada, or would you think of it more like a Blue Moon? I can't remember if I've tried the Duvel, but looks like one I'll have to try when I get somewhere that has a deep selection of beers. How might it compare to Chimay? We have a wide selection here but nothing that isn't "local" or in wide distribution across the country. Also, our laws limit the alcohol levels in beer. (And you may think a simple solution would be to sell the higher alcohol beers in liquor stores, but another law prohibits beer sales in liquor stores. )

It is more in the vein of a Belgian triple ale.

But I guess I'll find out what you mean the next time I can hit a Flying Saucer (should be Nashville in a couple of months) or the Brickskeller in D. C. in the spring. Is "triple ale" akin to a double bock or triple bock--except with ale, or am I out of my depth and grasping for a meaning?
