Cleaning old pipes

Gumby's post about his dad's pipes got me thinking. I have some old pipes of my dad and have been thinking about displaying on our fireplace mantle. They need some cleaning, and recomendations on what I should use. I thought about wood polish like pledge, but not sure if its a good idea. Also one pipe is a calabash, at least I think thats what its called (sherlock holmes type, lol) and I was told many of these are made out of a gourd and not wood, and suggestions on how to clean this one? Many thanks
