With a closed foot or perfecto cigar, I'll usually clip the foot before I light it. Then I'll toast it just to get an even burn, but not too much.
I don't care for shaggy foot cigars too much. They seem to be a pita to light sometimes and tend to spark too much. I will clip the shaggy part of the foot off before I torch it. Maybe I'm going about it all the wrong way.
