What coffees are you ordering?

I just popped for the following:

  • 5lbs Brazil Bob-O-Link from CBC (Burman is sold out)
  • 10lbs Indonesian Bali Kintamani Natural from Burman (which brings my total to 35lbs, and still digging this bean)
So what about you guys?

Define "decent."

I paid Burman $11.59 to get 10.5lbs of coffee shipped to me USPS Priority Mail. The postage on a Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate box is $10.95. That means that their shipping charge is $0.64 above their direct cost.

I'd rather pay that openly than get suckered in with a "free shipping" deal that is nothing more than an escalation of the product price in order to conceal the cost of shipping.

Good point.

I just put some stuff in my shopping cart at a few sites, nothing big as I am just learning. Buying two pounds was like $15 and then $16 in shipping charges.

Seemed a bit high to me. I this one of those items where you have to buy enough to make it worth the shipping or did I just happen to pick sites that rape you on shipping?

Wow...that does seem awfully high to me. I'm not sure I can help you much, as I do almost all of my business with one of 4 sites (Burman, SM's, CBC, and Uncle Beanz), and they're not unreasonable in terms of shipping charges.

Well, I need to qualify that a bit. I almost always buy in 3- or 5-pound quantities, because I go through a lot of coffee and, being the cheap bastige that I am, because I want the discounts. I usually choose USPS Priority Mail when it's offered as an option, because it's MUCH faster than UPS Ground and because the difference is generally slight (it was less than a dollar on that Burman order). They can pack right around 11lbs of green coffee into a medium flat rate box, and ship it anywhere in the US for $10.95 in postage. They can get the boxes for free, so it's a very cost-effective way to ship.

Maybe an email to the site owners suggesting they add USPS PM as a shipping option would be in order? Or maybe go with one of the sites I listed - I've been dealing with them for many years, and have always been totally satisfied with their coffee, their prices, and their customer service.

I've seen people on other boards post that Mr. Jerry roasts too dark. Never having had his coffee, I couldn't personally knock his coffee.
