Common Coffee Conundrums

Thought we could start a thread answering questions about coffee we see here all the time. Thusly we could discuss it, and have a single thread to point at when are caffeine levels drop.

Spiridon suggested this, so blame him if you don't like it!

Storage:

Green beans - cool, dry place, preferably in cloth bags

Roasted beans - airtight, moisture tight. Not the fridge, not the freezer. Try to store no more than you can use in a week. Air and water are the enemies!

Grinding for a French Press, contrary to your instructions grind as fine as you can stand, heat water to just before the boil, brew for 2 minutes give it a swirl to help mix the grinds and plunge, never let the coffee sit in the press after brewing

coffee can brew in a FP for 3-4 minutes 2 minutes is too little time for full extraction, IMO. also it's less messy to stir with a spoon instead of swirling.

question always come up about which brands are better and that is very subjective, however, having done demo's on many machines has given me a leg up, i still get machines to demo from time to time. so fire away.

Fresh is Best

The fresher the coffee the better. There are MANY sources for coffee beans (roasted for you) - Mr Jerry is one. The key is getting FRESH coffee. You won't believe the difference!

Find a local roaster. Or mailorder from a good vendor. Many of us don't like Starbucks - lower quality beans roasted to dark.

And try to only buy what you can quickly use. It loses its specialness quickly.
