I just nubbed one of these that arrived this morning via UPS Express! Box date is 11/98.
These cigars are Robusto size (5x48) which were packed very tightly in their box, giving them a pronounced 'box press' shape. In spite of that, the wrappers appear to be in fine shape. The wrapper was a very nice looking medium brown, with just a hint of red to them. Veining, like many Cubans, is almost nonexistant. The wrappers are smooth and beautifully constructed. Pre-light feel was firm without being hard. The burn of this cigar was excellent, with a nice silver-grey, fine ash, easy draw, and a ton of smoke. My surprise came with the strength - a definite mild/medium. I guess I've been smoking so many Bolivars and stronger cigars that I expected more strength. The lack of that harsh, back-of-the-throat bite of many Cubans was missing, but the flavor remains! This is a VERY NICE cigar! Tons of flavor, but a very smooth smoke with little or no harshness. The taste of the Cuban tobacco was there, but it was mellow and creamy. I could taste a bit of coffee, and a hint of cedar, but basically just a wonderful taste profile. I'm sure glad I found these smokes! Overall I'd give these smokes a 9 out of 10. With a price of under 6 bucks each, why should I get a smoke shop premium when I can get an excellent Habanos?
