Hoyo de Monterrey Churchill 2000
Hoyo de Monterrey Churchill
Country of fabrication: Cuba Year of issue: 2000 Box code: Unknown Dimensions: 7 inches by 47-ring gauge Date of review: Monday May 19th, 2009 Accompanying beverage: Freshly ground and brewed coffee. A blend of Tanzanian, Ethiopian and Yemen beans. Wrapper leaf: Medium Colorado. Uniform walnut brown with the fine veins displaying khaki tones alongside their micro-thin, burnt umber center lines. Fine tooth and a soft, semi-gloss sheen. Construction: Medium box press. Good roll density. An expertly applied tripe-seam cap. Combustion: Slightly erratic burn edge. No re-lights necessary, however. Total time of session: Approximately 1½-hours. Pre-light aroma: Sweet and musty overall, evidencing the age of the cigar. A melding of old leather, cedar, clay earth and something faintly hinting at caramel, or raisins perhaps. Pre-light draw: Mild tobacco gently enhanced with cedar. Post-light aroma: Sweet, fragrant tobacco. Opening portion: Mildness just on the cusp of entering into medium strength territory. Delicate herbal notes intertwined with cedar and a reticent core tobacco taste. Light dashes of lime zest and white pepper. Little sweetness as yet. Early stages: The first signs of sweetness arrived on the palate in the form of chocolate nuances that slowly acquired a dairy-like smoothness. These intermingled with the leather and tobacco characteristics, creating a fuller, more satisfying sensation and pushing the herbal and citrus notes to the perimeter. Mid portion: A velvety mélange of well cured tobacco and crème brûlée counterpointed by underlying suggestions of earth dusted with cocoa. Very homogeneous amalgamation of the various elements. Latter stages: A tad stronger and fuller as the core tobacco trait gained prominence. Rode a fine edge between sweetness and dryness. Overall impression: Quite a distinct flavour presentation from the Caramilk-laced demeanour of the Hoyo de Monterrey Double Corona, though no less alluring for that. All told, a truly excellent, mild mannered sample from a patchy period in Cuban cigar production. The way in which the various flavour aspects coalesced over the course of the session was especially noteworthy.
