Blending Suggestions

Hey everyone, I found a really great tobacconist by the name of The Cigar Warehouse in Sherman Oaks, CA, and they are the best B&M I've been to. Great prices, great hospitality, huge selection. They sell a bunch of pipe tobacco and I was interested in doing some blending.

My question is, how should I get started? Should I just start experimenting? Base it on a favorite blend? Should I smoke pure leafs and put together tastes that I like? For instance, should I smoke a bowl of Virginia, then a bowl of Perique, etc. and take notes on the flavors I like and then start blending based on those notes?

Please forgive me for asking such a long-winded question, I'm just interested in doing this, gives me a chance to make a hobby out of something I'm starting to like.
