Review: GLP Telegraph Hill

I received a sample of this newish GL Pease blend from Mike @ Mars in my last order. I wanted something different today, so I fired up a bowl in my Rino carved bulldog.

From the TobaccoReviews.com website:

A sturdy foundation of Virginia tobaccos, each chosen for its particular character, is enhanced with fine flakes of perique for a refined smoking experience. Telegraph Hill is rich and flavorful, with a satisfying, lingering finish. Each sip builds upon the last, creating a marvelous edifice of taste and aroma. You won't worry about earthquakes if your pipe is filled with this wonderful blend

My findings:

This texture of this blend is ribbon-cut and then chopped slightly. It's mostly tan and medium brown in color with a smattering of dark pieces. I packed with a light hand as I do with all GL Pease tobaccos. The flavors throughout were quite consistent - although they became a bit stronger the second half. The Virginias provided most of the sweet and somewhat creamy tobacco core while the Perique added a nice spicy dimension. The pipe got a bit warm by the halfway point, but that is just due to the natural sugars in the Virginia leaf. Even so, this blend did not really smoke hot and there was no excess moisture. I'm not a real lover of Perique blends, but this one certainly hit home with me. I think I'll be adding some tins of this one to the cellar to age.
