I liked a Gurkha!
I was given a Gurkha Shaggy Torpedo by the Gurkha rep in my local B&M on wednesday. Normally not a big Gurkha fan, I fired-up This cigar with some trepidation. This cigar enters the treacherous waters of the Dominican Puro; heretofore dominated by the Opus X. While the Gurkha Shaggy doesn't approach the complexity and intensity of the fabled Opus; it does stand its own ground as a very nice smoke. It was a little difficult to achieve an even light on the shaggy foot of this cigar; but it burned evenly nonetheless. The shaggy wrapperless foot of this cigar starts the smoke off mild yet complex. About 3/4 inch into the smoke the 8 year old Dominican wrapper ignites; bringing with it a new level of nuance and flavor that lasts to the nub. Having been previously dissatisfied with this cigar company, I would never have picked up this stick if it hadn't been offered as a free sample. I'm still not comfortable with the notoriously high Gurkha price-point, but for the first time in a long time I'm impressed with a Gurkha cigar. I felt that it was worth mentioning. I consider this cigar worth a try at least once (even if you have to pay the $10 or so) just to experience Gurkha's run at a Dominican Puro. Not bad.
