I have an 75-count Dunhill humidor that my wife bought for me in 1999. The instructions call for replacing the humidifying device every year or so which I have not done yet. Am I damaging my cigars by not replacing this thing or is it just a way to keep me spending $? I have noticed that the device does have a little bit of a sticky residue on it.

Also, occasionally when I add water to the device the hygrometer reading doesn't seem to change. What gives?
