Casa Fernandez Miami Reserva toro
For the last number of weeks, your humble scribe has been posting reviews and other Cigar Weekly articles to our Facebook page. As I've always said we have some really solid talent writing articles for us, and of course you all know that Doug (Jazznut) and Jason (BigO) are the very best in the business. But we have some tremendous individual reviewers, too.
Ringo has recently returned and has graced us with some quality reviews, and I'm getting the urge to write a little, again. Well, that, and I am looking to further legitimize my smoking a cigar on a Monday night. As is my practice, I simply opened the humidor and chose something that looked really appealing. So, here you are, I pulled out a Casa Fernandez Miami Reserva toro. It looks tremendous. I have done a little searching on this one, and while this may be a worthy review, it certainly will not be the first. It appears I am about five years late to the party on this one. Here are the particulars, and they are tantalizing to be certain. This is a Nicaraguan puro but manufactured in the United States, thus the "Miami" line. The "Reserva" part is borne out by the fact that Cigars International has boxes on back order, and that the Titan (6"x 60) also has five-packs on backorder. This one, the Toro measures 6" by 54 ring gauge. Here is Cigars International's background on this: Quote:
It's time to light on this heavy, humid, but not overly hot, New Orleans evening. It lights with ease, and the draw is pleasingly facile. There's no tightness in it, and it's not overly loose either, and it's giving me ample, dense smoke. The flavor at the outset, here, is satisfying. It's billed as a medium to full-bodied cigar; it's not all that sweet, but has a character that's earthy. Dare I use the revered "barnyard" descriptor without being accused of blasphemy from our resident lovers of Habanos or even our old JLOH members? Time to smoke, and watch a bit of Copa America Centnnario, the Socialists against those Tri-Color cabrones? I will edit, amend and edify in mere minutes. Edit #1 I am a half inch into this, and it appears to be solid, and well constructed. It's burning quite straight and razor thin. I am getting a leathery character, very deep flavor, and still a wonderful abundance of smoke. This is, so far, a treat, I am somewhat reluctant to set it down in the ash tray. I want to hold this thing. Edit #2 The ash dropped not long after the first edit about three-fourths of an inch in. It tunneled just a little, but has straightened itself out. The leather character has become most prominent, and it's not unpleasant in any way. The burn is approaching the first of the two bands, so that obstacle is about to happen. Fine cigar, up to now. Edit #3 I am approaching the end, there's still some woody characteristics, although a little char creeping in now. The leather is there, yet, too, and a touch more sweetness. This has been enjoyable and I hope to come across this cigar, again. I highly recommend this fellow.
