Corncobs?

I'm looking for an alternative to the clay pipes I have and am pretty much looking at briars, but the prices on cob pipes are pretty attractive. The only experience I have is with a Missouri Meerschaum taster that I was given at IPCPR as a sample. The main problem I see it that it looks like the cob is eventually going to burn up.

Experiences? Comments?

Alternative inexpensive briar pipes?
