Best Blues Artists

I know this is very subjective... but , here are mine , and you will be hard pressed to to top them ... in order... top 3

1. RL Burnside
2. Junior Kimbrough
3. Byther Smith

RL and Junior are arguably the best there ever was , if you do not know them do some research... many of the blues classics are penned by RL...

RL and Junior are Mississippi hills guys...
Byther is Chicago... (Blows BB King away)

Discuss ....

Django Reinhardt is a tough one to leave out. So is Robert Johnson.

Robert Johnson, Son House, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Lightning Hopkins and Muddy Waters

Robert Nighthawk also maybe

And Leadbelly (is he folk or blues?)

Johnny Clyde Copeland was a favorite of mine as was Pinetop Perkins (who stayed at a friend's house after a concert and asked for beer for breakfast)

Django was a guitar genius but I think of him more jazz than blues

I usually think of the blues as a delta thing, but that is probably just me, but you know that crossroad and the devil legend...

RL may have written down songs he heard, who wrote some of those songs is probably up for debate. Often the person first to record was recording songs he had heard elsewhere, and a lot of them got paid 20 bucks to sing into a box, the guy who recorded it got credit, or later managers did.

Blues has a problem, since you play in 4/4 time you are kind of trapped in a way.

That's how the Carter Family got their break in country music. They went through Appalachia writing down what they heard.

So many styles of Blues to limit to just 3 Best..Delta, Hill Country, Texas, Chicago, Piedmont, Swamp, New Orleans.

Break them down and THEN rate...gets a bit more inclusive

Would respectfully add John Lee Hooker. His Boogie Chillun album is a personal favourite.
