Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro Robusto
This cigar premiered at the IPCPR in 2015; the fact that I am just now getting to it speaks to the plethora of good cigars on the market now.
The smooth mahogany colored wrapper is all tobacco aromas and the foot smells sweet. Good clean clip and generous cold draw on a medium bunch making me wonder about this box pressed beauty. Let's find out. Initial draw gives ample smoke with an almost chewy texture. The sweetness I smelled in the cigar's foot is translating to a honey like flavor, which is blending nicely with the overall tobacco flavors present. Paired today with a pecan honey Ale from BS Brewing, a semi-local company located in Seguin, TX, just east of here. What I didn't realize was how perfect it would pair with this cigar. Pepper notes are developing in the roof of the mouth mixing in well with the initial flavors. This cigar is a pleasing mostly full body smoke. The burn is mostly even with a solid light grey ash. A light touch up at the 1/3 mark, otherwise this cigar is smoking beautifully. Pepper notes have mostly moved to the retrohale as the sweet tobacco notes are thick on the palate. A coning to one side tells me that the ligero is not centered, but it's still a very well constructed cigar. The ash is tapping off fairly easily, preventing the dreaded "ash lap." The honey sweet notes are developing into a more caramel flavor at about the halfway point. The smoke continues to be thick and tasty. It reminds me very much of the regular Serie V flavors but with an extra "oomph." Passing halfway the cone is more centered and the burn is very even now. I am wondering if the box pressing might be the reason for the ligero not being perfectly centered. Nearing the 2/3 mark some cinnamon notes are developing, again blending nicely with the flavor profile and adding to the complexity of the smoke. A dark streak in the ash has developed along the burn flaw. The burn is acting up a bit, but not enough to detract from the overall experience. The smoke remains cool and plentiful. Once again I put it down at about one inch due to heat issues, something I have come to expect with most cigars. A very rich and pleasing cigar, the Oliva Serie V Melanio Maduro Robusto earns a solid 9/10. Joe Bob says check it out.
