Opus X Review

This was a "red-footed" 5 x 42 sized devil that has been in the humidor for two years or so. Although I am a near total devotee to Habanos, I occasionally branch off to some of the domestic premiums and have enjoyed many a fine Opus-X in the past.

This Petite Corona-size (number 5?) with a cedar wrap was no exception. From the start it filled your mouth with oodles of delicious, heavy smoke! I mean HEAVY smoke!! The kind I like when I smoke a cigar!!! The snow-white ash clung like a beaver on a log and the burn was straighter than Martha Stuart's book-keeping.

A sinfully dark wrapper glistened with oils and even now I can still taste this wonderful cigar. I know the Opus line gets an "overpriced and boring" review at times--but I have learned to smoke them only after some serious "relaxation" time in the 'dor.

An Opus that's "on" just fills the mouth with a multitude of delicious, nutty-type flavors. The draws have always been "spot-on" for me and the construction in general is impeccable. The only time I can recall an Opus-X being "off," is when I've smoked them right from the store and they are either over-humidified or just too young (yeah, yeah--I know it's "aged" tobacco and shouldn't have to be aged but my pallate says otherwise). With some age, I can honestly say they have been some of my finest smokes. I can vividly remember an Opus-X number 2 Torpedo a few years back that also had a few years on it; it was so sublime that I kept the damn label in my wallet for years afterward!! I think the ash clung for nearly the length of the cigar. Incredible smoke.

Soooooooooo, despite loving my cigars from the island south of you-know-where--I rarely turn down the opportunity to enjoy one of the finest cigars around--the (aged) Opus-X.

Good smoking,
