Ham and butt about to get cheaper

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-u...source=twitter

Mexico retaliates tariffs on steel and aluminum with a 20% tariff on American pork legs and shoulders.

Adding China and Russia to the list, it's shaping up to be the summer of pork.

which is good, but long term, not so sure

My thinking is that this is a tactical move in the process of renegotiating NAFTA. I don't think that the tariffs are going to be long term. Just enough to depress pork prices for the rest of the year IMO.

if it was limited to NAFTA members I would be more inclined to agree with you. Farmers live on narrow margins, and markets equilibrate as suppliers move to supply things which are profitable.

Considering that the US tariffs are against Canada and Mexico, that's what led me to believe that it's part of renegotiating NAFTA.

The tariffs on China and the EU have been threatened, but not yet implemented. China and Russia have halted pork imports due to porcine encephalitis and should be lifted soon.

Even so, the freezers are already full and the product is going to have to move. I've already seen $0.99 butts, $1.68 loins, and $1.79 baby back ribs this summer.

Sausage may take a dive that is unprecedented. Ham and other whole meat are going to be more affordable, and all of those low grade chops and other stuff will still be there. Will we see chops going for half a buck a pound, or will we see the stuff ground for sausage, processed, and sold for about three times that much? Sausage can go into frozen storage until the prices go up, to a certain extent.

Looking forward to fifty cents a pound bratwurst.

Bacon? That stuff is never going to go down. Gold, gas, even temperatures go down, but bacon? that's going to be at the top forever.

Hunger and political oppression push people from their homes to search for a better world, often they will do any job to accomplish that
