JR Alt to Cuban R&J Bully
That's right, an ALT!! The line that everyone loves to hate!
I picked this cigar up the last time I was at JRs in Burlington, since I have never given an Alt a fair shake. Since it was cold out, I figured I could take a chance with the Alt, if I got too cold I wouldn't feel bad about pitching it. Construction was much better than I had expected before removing the cello, it had a solid feel and a silky, reddish-brown wrapper with a slight sheen. Clipped perfectly and the draw was right on par. Upon lighting, the aroma and flavor were not too bad, really. It reminded me of some Dominican puros, slightly grassy and a bit creamy. There was a hint of sourness, that I guess is supposed to simulate "the Cuban twang." After about an inch, the flavor changed, taking on a darker tone, reminiscent of the Bauza line, with a distinct sweet fruit-like taste. Maybe the tobacco is cased? None the less, it now produced an after taste that had a somewhat putrid quality, sort of dark chocolate and cherry artificial flavoring and a slight hint of soot. Kind of like using your cherry coke as an ashtray while still drinking the beverage. I smoked on another half-inch or so, but found no changes or redeeming qualities. As a budget-priced smoke, I guess it really wasn't THAT bad. I mean, I've definitely smoked worse, but I don't think I'll be picking up any more. And compared to Cuban R&J? I didn't harbor any delusions that the cigar would even come close, and on that I was not disappointed. |
