What's the deal with filters?
I've been trying to decide which corn cob pipes to buy and I've noticed that some are filtered and some are not? Filters seem to be pretty cheap, but are they necessary? I'm sure this is like the cello on or off question with cigars, but I'm just looking for personal opinions.
Thanks.

If the pipe, such as a corn cob pipe, is listed as a filtered pipe, does that mean you have to use the filter, or that you can use the filter?

There are people who really like filters. They will keep tobacco and excess moisture out of your mouth. Paper filters are basic and are usually found in cobs or Medico pipes. Savinelli uses balsa filters.
But I don't like filters. You have to change them often as they get cruddy pretty fast and will give a bad taste. You also have to clean the filter chamber often for the same reason. You can smoke a filter pipe without the filter. But on a normal pipe the draft is about 1/8" or smaller. On the filter pipe it will be a lot wider. Condensate will collect in the filter chamber and you may draw moisture. In any case the tobacco flavor will be different. Plus the filter chambers always seem to take on a nasty odor over time that affects flavor. I've experienced the same thing with full bent pipes that have a huge opening in the tenon end of the stem. But there are plenty of people who smoke those pipes and like them. |

Yeah, I've read that the filter needs to be changed every three to four bowls. But, the filters are cheap.
I guess I just need to try it and see what I think. A corn cob pipe is about $10 bucks or less, with filters another couple bucks. I'm not going to go broke giving it a try.

If you are going to smoke 3 or 4 bowls today, then yeah, you can probably do that on 1 filter. But if you smoke a bowl today and then let the pipe sit a week, change the filter. Swab out the filter chamber with alcohol and a Q-tip as well.

That makes sense. For me, I'd probably smoke one to two bowls in a day. Unless I'm going to smoke again the next day, I think it would be best to toss the filter.

I like the Savinelli balsa filters in their pipes, it seems to help with heavier tobbaccos keeping the moisture level down. Otherwise I have experimented extensively with paper and charcoal filters and do not care for them at all. In fact I've gotten rid of all of the 9mm pipes I had.

I leave the filters out except for some of the juicier aros and heavy tobaccos like AK does. I leave them in those cheaper pipes that take filters because of the sludge that developes in those pipes. I've tried the inserts, but they cause too much condensation in the stem. I definitely don't like the charcoal filters. To me, they leave a bad taste when smoking. It's your choice, try them with and without, and then make your own decision.
