Sancho Panza Bachilleres CSU

Sancho Panza Bachilleres
4.5 X 40
Filler – Cuba, Binder – Cuba, Wrapper - Cuba

Small and modestly adorned with the simple brown printed Sancho Panza band, this Franciscano sized cigar was light in hue with some small green discolorations on the wrapper. A few small cracks near the head from rolling around in a mostly empty box caused the wrapper to peel away a bit, but that was my fault not the cigar's. The pre light aroma was of earth and fermented forest floor, and the test draw was firm yet promising.

From the start, the cigar delivered medium strong Cuban flavor that was mildly tinted with a faint taste reminiscent of turpentine. Not unpleasant, the cigar had the personality of a country craftsman. Rough and slightly salty with no pretenses, this cigar stood on its own merits. The aroma of the smoke was green and a bit harsh, but matched the spirit of the stick well. Construction proved flawless, and it burned well all the way down.

While the wrapper at the head started to peel away as the cigar was moistened, the ash clung tightly. Dark and varigated with black stripes, it formed a tight cylinder extending ever farther with each puff before being tapped off at the halfway point. The finish was oily and rich, and lasted far longer than the diminutive size of the cigar would suggest. Smoked on a cold and misty night while bringing a load of firewood up from the wood barn, the cigar was bold enough to counter the chilling breeze.

Not a shrinking violet, the Bachilleres smokes bigger than it is. This sample was rolled during the peak of the boom, and I fear it suffered a bit from the rush to market that period saw as evidenced by the resinous flavor. Still, I was pleased with the experience and definitely recommend this vitola.
