Cheaper beef is coming!

Japan just slapped a 50% tariff on American beef. Domestic beef is about to get cheaper!

Let's hope that holds true, J. I'm in the mood for some good $5/lb steaks.

Picked some up two nights ago, John. It's "Texas Star" or somesuch, angus beef that my local carries as, supposedly, a step up from their regular steaks.

NY Strips at $5.99 per pound. Got one pack of two steaks for me and James.

Looking forward to seeing that in the local stores - Kroger often has 'whole strip loin' for 5.99, but you'll buy 8lbs, trim a pound off in fat, then butcher it into steaks yourself...

unfortunately like cheap gas I fear the supply/demand equation will come to equilibrium with higher costs than before. Enjoy it while it is cheap.

It couldn't come at a worse time for the cattle farmers. The herds are back to the pre drought strength and are ready again for slaughter. Once the freezers are full, and they are just clearing the pork glut from China and Russia bans over porcine encephalitis, they'll have little choice but to drop prices. Supply and demand.

The article I read was an early one and didn't make any distinction between fresh and frozen. That, along with freezes on a lot of Argentinian beef due to contamination issues led me to my conclusion. If it was premature, I apologise.

As for Venezuela, I wouldn't count on uninterrupted exports. They are so poor and so close to civil war, that there's little chance, IMO, that there won't be disruptions. They're killing zoo animals for food. Sounds pretty desperate to me.

There is some grocery store here that still cuts its own meat and it's decent. I drove past today and strips were $5.

Wife went and got a few of those strips. I've had sirloin and round that tasted better and were more tender. They were fine for $3 meat.

I'd really, really like to have a standing rib for Christmas, I'm going to think about it.

At that price, it was likely Select grade. Just a step above stew beef.
