Unrest in Nicaragua

Have to google what's happening not seeing it in mainstream media. Of course the story below is being reported it involves the death of a US citizen. If it wasn't for that, crickets. Was speaking with a cigar company owner recently and he is nervous about getting his product out of Nicaragua in a timely manner and without added fees.

I heard an interview with Glynn Loope on the radio yesterday and the CRA plans to ask two Senate subcommittees to do perform a comprehensive national security evaluation of Central America. Not just for the premium cigar industry, but he acknowledged that the potential disruptions to supply as well as finished product were a threat to the industry in the US.

I have living memory of when Ortega and the Sandinistas were trying to gain power over the remnants of the Somoza regime. That was over 30 years ago. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss it seems.

This area (Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala) have been a hotspot in this hemisphere for over 100 years. Lot of people don't remember that we invaded Nicaragua on behalf of the United Fruit Company, not once, but twice. We went to war because of this hotspots' importance to the hemisphere, not to mention cheap bananas. Protest and revolution in that area is so much a part of the culture that it's practically a sport. And, yes, I am kidding about that part. Don't get me started about Columbia, Panama and what TR did in the region to build the Canal.

You also have to understand that the numbers of illegal immigrants pouring into the US are largely from those countries seeking refuge and safety from the violence. They could legitimately claim refugee/asylum status. So, the conflict has other consequences for the US, too. Not just cigars and fruits.

Were it not for Costa Rica, Central America and Venezuela would be vying with much of Africa for the title of Most Messed Up.
