Adult music students?

I was wondering if anyone else has picked up the bug to learn an instrument later in life. I'm 32 and have recently (January) started learning the piano. I've never been able to read a lick of music, and my work schedule means that sometimes there are lengthy delays between lessons, but I'm really enjoying myself.

I'm actually using interactive software that's 10 years old (bought new on eBay for $4.00) that actually points out mistakes as I play. I can take a lesson when I need to, and my 2 year old already loves playing.

Any music teachers out there who can tell me whether it's possible to move to a different instrument in time? Is the piano a "gateway" instrument?
