SORRY - I just gotta whine about a gig
Tonights Buzzard Meat gig , I am Melvin Jenkins to keep Leonard from being embarassd, is shaping up to SUCK. When I was asked to fill in for their 'front' man, I reluctantly agreed saying we had to play together at least once. OK that didn't happen - Now the drummer is 'iffy' on whether he can make it. I say well get another drummer - Oh we can just play without a drummer - are you out of your f&*king mind I don't wanna play without a drummer - the other guitar player can play congos...etc The fellow that booked this is a moron for putting people up there that has never played together (his band fell through) - but it's his name on the line not mine.
The only reason I have not backed out (wife told me not to do it from the git-go) is I would feel bad to leave them hanging. Good musicians I have seen 'em play but never played with them. They speak of making up tunes on stage..etc. I am not a superstar but I have looked foolish on stage before and it's NOT fun for me..I have only been to this club a few times, packed to the gils out the door. A young-preppie crowd NEVER again will I agree to something like this. The money is not great I was only doing it as a favor to the harp player, had no idea it was gonna be this messed up. Sorry I had to bitch. I shoulda told them NO when they refused to get together to go through a few tunes. I wish I was better at being a a-hole-jerk sometimes.

YEE-OWWW!
Guys that have NEVER played together before? Its either gonna be really really good, or really really bad. You're in a really tough spot. Give it all ya got and don't forget to smile a lot. Timing and knowing some of their fills as well as who's going to be the frontman and the straightman for joking with the crowd makes it a pure players show. Wait till its over to start drinkin'!

it went very good. Drummer and bass player are top notch Club wants 'us' back in June or July
I all set to dislike the drummer but he was a wonderul person, terrific drummer. Other guitar played a varlux (sp) through a pod straight in the PA. way too advanced for me. He did well at sitting out when in doubt & played well. It was pretty much my show they backed me up. We were all shocked that we pulled it off as well as we did. I had a blast - it was a well-to-do crowd & the ladies were dressed to kill. Defintely not what I expected. I am ready to do it again

it worked cause the bass player & drummer been playing together for years. They are solid and made it work in spite of me & the others.
So just having their respect at the end of the night was good for me.

I guess your big problem now is that you have to continue to bill as "Melvin Jenkins" or you'll risk alienating your fan base. You should performed decked out as an IBM mainframe programmer; courduroys an inch too short, short-sleeved shirt with tie and pocket protector, greezy hair, etc..
