I wondered what constituted a blend and it is kind of interesting that the blending of so many whiskies wouldn't constitute it being a blend (not questioning you, just marveling at the nuances of the industry).
My guess is on the Select is it is either just a marketing ploy to sale more whisky (what a concept) or maybe they have some batches that aren't up to snuff and this was their solution?

It's not that complicated... Really!
There are 3 basic categories of Scotch whisky: Blended - A combination of malt and grain whiskies Blended malt - A combination of malt whiskies from more than 1 distillery Single malt - Malt whisky from 1 distillery (the fact that all the whiskies used in a release come from a single distillery doesn't mean that many casks from that distillery can't be blended together and still be called a single malt)* *Periodically, distilleries or independent bottlers will issue limited release single malts drawn from single casks

The Aberlour 18-year-old is my go-to breakfast scotch -- a great drink!
