George T. Stagg for opening of deer camp
I'm on a lease with 10 guys. Traditionally they gather at the camp the night before the season opens to celebrate around the fire and grill some steaks and wild game.
This year I brought an 8 year old bottle of Stagg to share. Epic choice. The fire in the over-proof spirit was the perfect antidote to the chill evening air. Smooth and decadent, the entire group agreed it was the finest opening day bottle ever. However, when I went to replace it this year I was shocked to find the 2017 selling locally for up to $700 a bottle. The cheapest anyone in Austin had it was $399 and they sold all 3 bottles in a day. Woe is me. |

The escalation over time in the market value of some high-ticket bottles can indeed be frightening. Best to remember, "I bought this to drink, and that's exactly what I'm going to do." Besides, Stagg Jr, which is much more available and decidedly less expensive to boot, is a pretty decent alternative.

I'd report them to the distillery. Anyone caught selling it for more than the MSRP of $60 loses their place in line for next year's. If it's on the secondary market, no dice.
Unfortunately, I was spoiled on good bourbon before market lost its mind.

Anything that is available to mere mortals is likely secondary market in Texas. My local chain tells me strict allocation, and it’s for commercial accounts and individuals who spend over 10,000 a year.

It is sad what has happened to the whiskey prices in the US.
I dread when something I like gets a review somewhere that it is a "Top Integer of the Year Whiskey"

I finally located a bottle of Van Winkle 12 at a local mom and Pop. $1000.00. Far as I know, it's the only bottle left for sale in the ATL metro.
