Some times, this period is accompanied by hints of ammonia in the aromas coming off the cigars, leading some people to postulate that it represents a second or residual fermentation. I don't personally believe that, because true fermentation is simply not possible at humidor temperatures.

Whatever the reason, some cigars hit a point where they simply don't taste as well. That period can last a couple of months to over a year. Sealing cigars during that period would definitely not be a good idea.
