New morta squat author pipe, crazy heavy rusticated

I have had my eye on a Savinelli Author pipe for a long time. But these pipes are rather large, around 6 inches long, with a 1.5 inch bowl depth and heavily walled. The stem is usually thick and tapered like a thick wedge. Here's a pic of a Savinelli Author style pipe.

I wanted this style but a smaller version and a thinner stem with a slight bend. Martin at C Pipes made this pipe and it was perfect for what I was looking for. It is a smaller version of an Author pipe,. I wanted a small pipe for smoking the very strong tobaccos that are best smoked in a small bowl pipe.

This pipe is a Morta wood pipe, with a German Vulcanite black and brown stem. It is 4 inches long with a bowl size of 0.75 inch (inner diameter) x 1.18 inch (bowl depth). The bowl is thick walled and has a crazy heavy rusticated finish. This pipe can rest on a table without tipping over. This pipe can take the heat.

The stummel or the main body of the pipe has a rugged look that gives the impression it is an outdoorsman style pipe. But the stem with its elegant look gives the impression it is a sophisticated looking pipe. You would think it would not work well together in appearance, and for some people, it might not work. But the look works for me. I guess we can describe this pipe as rugged elegance.

Finally got the new pipe today. Took a while (13 days USPS), did ship from the Czech Republic. Definitely one cool nose warmer.

That is a beautiful pipe! I bet that's gonna smoke great!

I received an order yesterday also. I got some tobacco and some 9mm filters just to try out. I put one of the Hilson filters in a LV straight billiard pipe. The first draw was plugged! I had to take out the filter and lightly crush it in my hand to arrange the charcoal. This helped. The second filter I used in a LV curved pipe. I did the same before installing the filter and had no problems. The filters work fine.

I also smoked a bowl of Sutliff's Heavy English. It was ok, but nothing to get too excited about. The other pipe was filled with C&D Bayou Morning. This was good, very mild. I guess I'll let these tobaccos sit for a while before trying them again.

I haven't tried the others yet. They are C&D Epiphany, Sutliff Carmello, and Seatle Pipe Club's Vashon Falls.

Nice tobacco selections.

Some folks have asked me why smoke out of a small pipe. Here is a quick thought on this. I acquired this pipe for the purpose of smoking very strong tobaccos like GH Ropes, GH dark flakes, plug, and other strong tobaccos that smoke better out of small bowl pipes and require slow puffing. I think this pipe will work well for these types of tobaccos.

From experience, this pipe will not smoke so well with dense flakes like Samuel Gawith, and other brands with thick flakes since these flakes can be a bit difficult to smoke often leading to hard puffing leading to overheating the pipe. These types of tobaccos burn too hot with small pipes.
