It's slow , and you have to read the catalogers' minds to guess the descriptors to actually find what you seek.

I misspoke. LC is published work. National Archives would be the place to look. If you think regular cataloging is complicated, Archival cataloging will give you fits.

that sadly makes sense. My best friend's daughter did a residency at MOMA cataloging television programs and said the biggest learn was what the previous resident was thinking so she could try to be consistent

Archiving material is a lot more work than most people would think.

Truth. Original library cataloging as well, sometimes even simply uploading records to my own catalog and looking at the subject headings the LC catalogers or vendor catalogers have chosen causes me to scratch my head and re-do it.

It takes a certain literal mind to be a successful cataloger. In my experience, they have trouble cooking without a recipe. I had a fantastic cataloging teacher in grad school. Enjoyed it enough to intern in the cataloging section. I learned very quickly that I didn't want to do that for a living.
