I just went to a pipe tobacco seminar a few weeks ago. The owner makes his own pipes and sometimes does repairs. Anyway, stems are tricky things because no two pipes have one stem that fits both perfectly. It takes a bit of work to do, but is relatively cheap when you hand it off to a pro.
