I used old cigar boxes for storage years ago (my pre-coolerdor days). They work ok, but you have to keep an eye on the humidity elements.
I took an empty wooden cigar box (the heavier and closest sealing you can find), and applied a couple of coats of polyurethane to the exterior. (let it dry very thoroughly!) Then I got a cheap credo type humidifier from my local shop and stuck it to the inside of the lid. I made 2 of these, in addition to my regular humidor, and used them for several years. Not the best, but it worked - and looked better than a ziploc bag.
