House approves exemption for premium cigars
As part of the $1.2T omnibus spending plan. Still has to pass the Senate. Good news!

This is obviously good news. But I'm not counting my chickens before they hatch. Once the senate passes it and Trump signs it, then I will start celebrating.

The bad news is that it is attached to a record breaking budget and a lot more debt just as the Fed is trying to reduce their holdings of government bonds, which is the primary way the government borrows money. That means there have to be tax increases or more money printed, further reducing it's value through inflation.
It's not a wise position to be in, but it will be politically popular until a bubble bursts and a deflationary period is called for, but unaffordable given all of the borrowing in the last recession. The only way to counter inflation is to. Raise interest rates and the government is in so much debt, that would make interest payments the single largest line item in the budget. Yeah, it's a victory for the cigar community, but it isn't much good for the nation at large.

I hardly see how exempting Cigars from the control of the FDA is detrimental to the nation at large.

You missed the entire point of my post, Rob. It isn't the cigar exemption that is bad for the country, it's the omnibus spending bill it is an amendment to.

Omnibus bills are the one greatest pitfall of a republican democracy.
A pure democracy couldn't survive, management would devour all resources as individual details were micromanaged by millions of citizens. We have elected officials who manage for us. Even so, managing is impossible when it involves the millions of items of legislation that go through the various federal and state programs. So thanks to the way it works, for every piece of important and necessary legislation, someone manages to stuff in a thing or two that just wastes time, but it's not worth the time and effort to fight it. The line item veto would be great, but god knows how these yahoos would manage to mess that up. The pissing match of the century right here at our doorsteps as the president tries to muscle congress and congress pushes back. |

I am going to assume that whatever happened there will not be a positive difference in the price of cigars.
